His writing is so intense and drew me in from the first page. The descriptions made me feel like I could reach out and touch, smell, hear and see everything. I was completely immersed in the story.
It's a well written book and the plot is what caught my attention. A little girl is found in the woods and the family keeps her. She grows up to be on an "American Idol" type of show. A group of fans reach out to her and will do anything she says.

It just seemed to jump into something different as the book went on, it wasn't terrible, I just wasn't into it. This will not stop me from reading more by this author.
I awaited the release of this book excitedly because I had read Let the Right One In and really loved it. This book just didn't all seem to come together like that one though. Characters are introduced and explained in great detail and then they disapear. Teresa and her family both act in ways that I felt at times were very unbelievable and the central mystery as to who or where Theres is and comes from was never alluded to again. The book is well written as I knew it woud be, I just didn't care for the plot on this one. At times I was realy bored reading this.
I've now read all JAL's novels and short stories, but this one is unique. If you're a fan of his work (and what's not to love--he's a gifted wordsmith and storyteller), you can't go wrong with this one. Teen angst and horror--chilling stuff.
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars on this book. I love this author's books. His first three were so incredibly good that when I got my hands on this one I was kind of expecting magic. Well, that didn't happen. While this was still a good story, I just didn't get the ending I was expecting. Something jaw dropping, I'd guess. Sure there was murder and mayhem and a good story line, but it all seemed a bit anticlimactic. Also, my big question of where Little One came from and why was she left to die in the forest was never answered. I would still recommend this book. Mr. Lindquist can write with the best of them. I just think that with a bit more work this story could have been amazing.
this would have to be the most disturbing novel i have ever read.

a failed pop star goes out to pick mushrooms and instead finds a baby girl. she is wrapped in plastic and buried under the forest floor. he really doesn't care, the child isn't his problem, until the girl opens her mouth and cries. instead of the squeals and squalls of a newborn, the girl seems to sing, her voice hitting a perfect c note. she must be special, have a gift of music and singing and so she must be taken care of.

it could be the beginning to a heart warming story but it isn't. the baby, little one, is already odd and she is raised in a basement. her adopted father insists she is not spoken to and instead only sung to. little one is unlike any other child. she has no interest in people and her companions are not teddy bears and dolls but drills and hammers. raised under the belief that if she leaves the house, she will be eaten by "big people", little one has contact only with her adoptive parents and their son.

the novel also follows another girl of the same age, teresa, growning up in suburbia. teresa connects with little one when the strange child appears on the idol reality tv show and the two girls link to unleash chaos and violence.

i really loved this book. it will be polarising, people with either loathe it or adore it. it isn't a pretty story. nobody could ever accuse the author of sugar coating things. in fact, if he baked you a biscuit, there wouldn't be a grain of sugar in it. the ingrediants would be rusty nails and broken glass and tears. when you bit into it, you'd taste loneliness and blood and emptiness. there is no "good" character in the whole book. every single character is frightning. i wouldn't like to be on a train with any of them. this is such a dark book. saying that, it might be hard to understand just why i enjoyed it so much. the prose is beautiful. poetry is a recurring motif throughout the story and lindqvist is a poet. in other hands, this story could have been nothing but blood spatter, brutal and ugly, but linqvist spins a silver web of sorrow. the subject is painful and he shapes the events with such skill that it becomes poignant and heartbreaking.

the insight of this novel is incredible. to me, it is an exploration of teenage girls, a glimpse into a section of the world that is never seen- the empty, the disconnected, the lonely, those girls who move through life hungering to feel alive. the novel follows a girl as she is systematically broken; she is destroyed by the torture that is every day living. this is a portrait of a girl who is always being damaged by the world around her, a girl who knows she needs something to help her, something to change life, to fill her, to give her meaning, something that will never be found.

lindqvist's lost girls only lead themselves deeper into the woods, wander further from the warm cottages and throw themselves to the wolves. this is a gritty, disturbing and beautiful book. it isn't for the faint hearted. it isn't for the easily offended. it sinks deep into the darkness in the hearts of the unseen girl and howls out in the night.
