Tallis' Third Tune Ellen L Ekstrom 9781926760650 Books

Ellen Ekstrom has turned a basic story of first love and heartbreak into a sparkling piece of literary fiction. The protagonist's name, Alice, is aptly chosen, since her journey is rather like the one into the rabbit hole (or through the looking glass). Right off the bat, Alice finds herself in what might be the afterlife, whimsically populated by famous dead people who like to do crosswords, drop enigmatic advice, and serve her Diet Pepsi and cheesecake in a cute village shop overseen by a strict Proprietress (in a form resembling Helen Mirren playing Queen Elizabeth II). But Alice can't merely lounge and chat: she keeps getting thrown back into scenes from her life, in out-of-sequence order, to remind her of the important moments and--evidently--to give her a chance to change a few details and recapture a lost happiness.

I was greatly impressed by the way in which Ekstrom presented a life in random sequence in a way that still made sense as a whole, yet kept me guessing and hoping till the end on the most important questions. I completely related to the ache of looking back on your losses and errors and difficult moments--anyone would. And most of all, I loved her writing style, which was crisp and gorgeous throughout, scintillating with sensory details (oh, the colors, the tastes, the music!). Here's hoping we all get a quasi-afterlife village like the one Ekstrom has created.

Tallis' Third Tune Ellen L Ekstrom 9781926760650 Books Reviews

This book is engaging, interesting, and full of many true-to-life details that make you hold the book and its story tight, not wanting it to end. Ellen Ekstrom is a dedicated, gifted writer who continues to delight her readers with great stories.
Historian Alice Martin finds herself in a shop surrounded by some of the historical figures she has spent her life studying. They help her relive, revisit, reexamine and possibly change key moments in her life she shared with two men in her life. I loved story and manner in which Ekstrom puts together the out of order pieces of Alice's past with the moments of discussion and evaluation as those who Alice studied in her work in a way study her.
This book pulls on your heartstrings. It is about Alice Martin, a historian, who gets the chance to re-do parts of her life. I was a little confused in the beginning with all the jumping around to different parts of Alice's life but the more I read the book the more I was able to understand it. I grew to love just how beautifully Ellen Ekstrom wove the different parts of the story together. I also loved how Alice had different historical figures helping her along the way. I loved seeing how Ekstrom portrayed those figures in her book. If you want to read a beautiful book that will leave you emotional than this is the book for you.
I absolutely loved this story. It is a well written tale of enduring love and a chance to relive the past, making amends and correcting mistakes. The author does an excellent job of moving from one time frame to the next, without confusing; not an easy task. The depiction of teenage frustration, young adult disillusionment and mature adult disappointment are cleverly intertwined with a delightful afterlife inhabited by well known historic characters. I enjoyed the settings of York and Scarborough, two of my favourite places. The story touches on some serious subjects to be sure, but is told with humour and compassion. Ms Ekstrom is on my favourite authors list and I can't wait for her next book.
Do we have second chances?
Is there ever a time when we can go back and fix our life?
A time when we can choose happiness? That is the question this
book asks.

Alice Rose Martin had quite a life. We are given the
opportunity to view it as she herself would in her memory, or
a life review. She suffered great loss and perhaps she had
also made choices that stood in the way of great joy. Or did
she?

This is a journey through life, history and perhaps
death itself. It makes me wonder how life would be
if we all had the opportunity to tweak and review. It
begs the question, what would you change?

Good read.
Alice is a historian so when she finds herself in a quaint village, in a curiosity shop surrounded by dead historical figures, she was a bit unnerved yet thrilled.

She begins to think about her life, past, present and her possible future with their help. What choices should she had made differently and how would it have effected her life? In love with two different men from two different paths in life, she isn't sure how to choose which one she should spend the rest of her life with - that is, if she can get back to it.

Filled with a vivid imagination and keen literary prose, Tallis Third Tune is a romance but also about one's self - purpose, choices, emotions. While at first, it's a bit confusing with all of the jumping around in Alice's life, the proprietress of the curiosity shop soon makes short work of tying everything together. I was sad to see it end - I wanted more! Highly recommend!
This novel pulled me in immediately. The characters are engaging and realistic in a way that you instantly love some and hate others. Ekstrom paints a picture for you of the various locations in a very elegant way. I especially love the Curiosity Shop descriptions and the descriptions of Scarborough. When I wasn't reading the book I found myself wondering what would happen to Alice and Quinn and hoping that it would turn out well for the both of them. The book takes you through Alice's life as she relives moments of it. All the pieces are tied nicely together by the character of the Proprietress, and it helps clarify what is going on. Ekstrom involves a variety of characters and each lends something informative to the story line. I found myself engrossed in the story, and I could feel Alice's emotions ranging from sadness, anger and elation. All of these elements are tied very nicely together because of the strong narrative writing and supporting dialogue. I recommend this novel for someone who wants to be wrapped up in a novel that really makes them think and feel.
