Shallcross will leave the reader changed and truly experienced in living through a special brand of the self. Charles Porter through character introduction and interaction, a haunting rendering of chapters, written accessibly and addictively, while featuring a beautiful and unremitting linguistic legerdemain. Readers are left questioning and challenging consciousness and humanity. Shallcross carries out like a screenplay, in the delivery of Kubrick or Lynch and moment one draws the reader inextricably into the text. This story, like similar epic tales begins in medias res so do not construct a timeline based on the dialogue and actions of the characters. It seems a journey for Aubrey Shallcross toward self-actualization but the action is far from cerebral. Indeed the book follows his movements throughout perhaps as a lead witness. I will speak mostly to its nature and styling, as details of the plot may ruin the experience. Readers are paralyzed by living through a led man, and Aubrey might agree. Veiled as a protagonist, we watch his cobbled life unfold and reform in mystical ways, incorporating a spectrum from the highly sensual to the morbid, yet we observe him as he observes his own life. Other players in the text seem incorporeal at times, and one wonders whether it is angels or demons that flank Aubrey throughout. The author truly does have an utter command of language and a frightening ability to turn metaphor into dimensional scenery. The book is transformative and exposes humanity in a way that leaves the reader vulnerable and completely connected to the characters in the story. Great fiction feels like a narrative, and Shallcross does. Despite rough, terse and explicit, even grotesque language at times and some dated reference but the reader lives in this book and its universe, adopts its moral and emotional signature, becomes fluent in its language and can not exit until its requiem. The reader is unprepared for the new knowledge of these characters, and continues to participate in the life the book they have been inserted into. The reader may well stand in the Garden of Eden, still and staring, wondering what he or she has just consumed. Be prepared though, one is exposed to nearly every type of religious and spiritual embrace and contempt, with some drug use as part of the journey so do be prepared. But hopefully there will be more work by this author. Certainly this book was worth the trip.

Charles Porter's exploration of mental illness, self-perceptions, and human interactions makes for an interesting read! Christopher Porter includes topics that may be taboo or carry a heavy stigma in the real world so no one talks about them.

The story is a bit strange and does not conform to social "norms" which makes for a very non-traditional story. Shallcross is mentally ill and we see things through his eyes and this creates a new vision of the world and a new found appreciation for those that see things different than we do. I also learned some things about Florida and about horses that I may never have learned either!

Definitely worth the read!
A note about this series I strongly recommend reading Flame Vine before starting Shallcross. Flame Vine is labeled as Book 2, but is the prequel to Shallcross, and really helps understand what's happening in the first few chapters. Aubrey's mind is complicated, and Porter dives right into it, with no preamble or pre-explanation in the text as to who his voices are, how he sees them, etc. There are also a lot of inside jokes in the first conversation between Aubrey and his best friend The Junior. These are explained in Flame Vine, and will make the reader far less confused when trying to decipher their banter.

On to the book itself I really love Porter's style for this absolutely beautiful look into the mind of a schizophrenic. Aubrey Shallcross is a 40-year-old bachelor who hears voices. In fact, he not only hears them, but sees them. Triple Suitor (aka Trip) is his best friend and closest voice, and is in fact the large mole in his armpit. He comes out to chat with Aubrey often, advises him on how to act (often reminding him not to be too obvious about talking to him), and helps him regain control when the other voice comes. This other voice - Slim Hand - is a dangerous voice. He has snuck up on Aubrey since he was a child, and shoves things - toasters, birds, anything - down his throat until Aubrey chokes.

Porter takes his reader deep into Aubrey's mind. The book is written in the third person, but from Aubrey's perspective, and this means that you will get lost sometimes as you read. Some sentences are awkward or don't seem to make sense, some descriptions of what Aubrey is experiencing are confusing and almost incomprehensible. What I found is that I actually loved that sense of confusion. This mind is unique - maybe it defies complete understanding from someone like me, who lacks the chemistry to hear voices like Trip's.

I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. But again - read Flame Vine first in my opinion!

Great foray into the life of a more rural south Florida. For me a walk down memory lane of the pristine Florida before the sea of tract houses, of the wild characters that inhabited it. If you like Peter Mathesson or "Land Remembered", you'll like this insight into a Florida that once was . The background of dressage training is also a good counterpoint.
“Within our own minds are endless universes of possibility. All paths exist at once and not at all—a Schrödinger’s cat mélange of perception. Shallcross explores one avenue of perception, commonly referred to among the less gifted as “schizophrenia.” Charles Porter creates a fantastical, impossible, textural word painting to draw the reader into Aubrey’s frightening, fragile world, in which sanity performs a slow canter pirouette around madness.”
Charlie Porter's first novel is disturbing at the same time it is engaging. It is hard to believe a story of mental illness, the drug world, perversion, violence and tragedy can be made comical. It is also hard to imagine juxtaposing the worlds of red-neck cowboys with dressage, two worlds the author knows well. The setting of the novel is a real place that the author knows intimately. Shallcross is weird yet profound. It is not a novel for the squeamish. I can imagine it being studied in college literature or psychology classes.
